aka the “Fuhrmann Engine”

Look how outrageously crowned the pistons are to get as much compression as possible out of the hemispherical head. Look at the bevel-gear camshaft drive, the aerodynamically shaped cooling system cowling and fan. Dry-sump oiling, dual distributor ignition, aluminum block, all in 1953. Over-engineered and very complex, it was built for high speed operation in a serious way.
